New Progress in Evaluating Labor-saving Cultivation Models of Citrus Using Remote Sensing Methods

Citrus is the world's largest type of fruit, and it is also the most widely cultivated and economically important fruit tree in southern China. At present, there have been two innovative labor-saving cultivation modes in the citrus industry, namely the wide row and narrow plant cultivation mode and the fence cultivation mode. Previous studies have shown that citrus fruits cultivated under the hedgerow cultivation mode have higher fruit quality.
Recently, Horticulture Research has launched a research paper (Advance Access) entitled "Characteristics of photosynthesis and vertical canopy architecture of citrus trees under two labor-saving cultivation modes using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) -based LiDAR data in citrus orchards". This study compared two labor-saving cultivation modes of citrus in Xinfeng County, Jiangxi Province - wide row and narrow plant cultivation mode and hedge cultivation mode - and revealed the differences in photosynthetic rate and photosynthetic nitrogen utilization efficiency among the three cultivation modes at the vertical scale of the canopy.
This study evaluates the spatiotemporal distribution of photosynthetic product accumulation under different cultivation modes through large-scale means, achieving the monitoring of photosynthetic characteristics of different plant structures on a large scale, laying the foundation for the information management and detection of orchards.
