Wood-oil tree (Vernicia montana) is a plant of the Vernicia genus in the family of Euphorbiaceae, which has important economic and ornamental value. It is dioecism, and the development of male and female flowers has specificity. Studying the characteristics of flower development and gender dimorphism can provide reference for analyzing the mechanism of gender differentiation in Vernicia montana.
Recently, Horticultural Plant Journal published an online research paper entitled "Flower development and sexual dimorphism in Vernicia montana" from the Key Laboratory of Economic Forest Cultivation and Protection of the Ministry of Education at Central South Forestry University. This study reveals the important role of hormones in the development and gender dimorphism formation of the flower Vernicia montana.
The results showed that the ethylene may determine the degeneration of stamens in female flowers, laying an important foundation for the analysis of gender differentiation mechanisms in Vernicia montana and other plants.
