Review on the Research Progress of Cold Tolerance in Grapevine

Climate change has an important impact on grape yield and quality. The main varieties of Eurasian grape planted in China are native to the Mediterranean climate area, and have poor adaptability to the typical continental climate environment in China. Therefore, it is always an important subject for grape researchers in China to study the mechanism of cold tolerance in grapevine and carry out grape cold resistance breeding.

The team of Liang Zhenchang from the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences is one of the earliest teams in China engaged in the research of grape cold resistance breeding and mechanism. Recently, the team was invited to publish a review article entitled "Advances in understanding cold tolerance in grapevine" on the international academic journal Plant Physiology, systematically summarizing the latest research progress of grape cold resistance.

This study elaborated the regulation process of grape response to cold stress at physiological and molecular levels, summarized the changes and functions of plant hormones, metabolites and photosynthesis under cold stress, and introduced the cold resistance mechanism of core signal components, important transcription factors and non-coding RNA in detail. This study reveals the important role of ethylene and AP2/ERF transcription factors in the regulation of grape cold resistance.
