Recently, Horticultural Plant Journal published online a research paper entitled "Genome-wide identification and characterization of the IPT family members in nine Rosaceae species and a functional analysis of MdIPT5b in cold resistance", which was finished by Han Zhenhai team of Horticultural College of China Agricultural University.

Cytokinins are widely involved in all processes of plant growth and development. Isopentenyl transferase (IPT) is a rate-limiting enzyme that catalyzes cytokinin biosynthesis. In this study, in order to understand the role of IPT family in cold resistance, 78 IPT candidate genes were identified in 9 Rosaceae genomes. The results showed that the ectopic expression of MdIPT5b could improve the cold resistance of transgenic apple calli and transgenic tomato plants. Under cold stress, the redox balance was affected by proline accumulation and remained stable.
